Thinking and Kindness

We have now examined two of our four curricular pillars, but in a way, we have been having one continuous discussion. The four characteristics we are examining overlap and support one another as well as the general curriculum. For instance, how would thinking take place in an environment without kindness? Remember the child who is fearful of responding or the teacher who calls incorrect answers garbage. Remember the child who is bullied, who is shut out, who is mocked by his peers.

At the same time, an environment of kindness cannot be constructed without thought. We need to model and teach thoughtful behaviors, especially as developed by Daniel Goleman. Students need to learn to think about the emotional consequences of their actions and words. They need to think about the meaning of words like respect. They need to think about the unintended consequences of what they do. They need to think about the words they choose to use in conversation. And finally, they need to reflect on the decisions they make while interacting with others.
